Wax, wax, baby!
So I was prepping to attend Jamaica for the first time in September! Can we get a Whoo-Whoo!!! I had my travel itinerary set, outfits laid out, and hair picked out. What was missing? A wax, of course!
After taking a quick assessment of my hairy needs, I decided on: a lip wax, underarm wax, and Brazilian wax. I immediately flashed back to the first time I walked into a wax shop and how nervous I was and all the questions I had — frantically checking google to see what I should expect and coming up empty-handed and confused. The scary truth was up until my 30's; I had only had my eyebrows waxed. I thought it would be a great time to share the best tips to get waxed, especially if you are a woman of color. Our hair grows differently, and we have additional steps to ensure a smooth, waxing experience.
A "Brazilian Wax" includes the strands along the vagina lips and in your behind. You can opt to leave a triangle or landing strip of hair on top. Or, you can go entirely bare.
I am so fortunate that I found the best esthetician in my city! Meet Jade Aiken, better known to her clients as Jade the Waxer. She was gracious enough to sit down, and chit chat with me! Check out the Youtube video below as we talk best wax practices.
Prep: Hair should be the length of a grain of rice or longer to ensure a smooth waxing experience. Remember, if the hair is too short, the wax will not adhere. Cleanliness is key! Use feminine wipes in a pinch or a good shower before your appointment. Remember, you and your wax specialist are about to become REALLY close, be considerate concerning your hygiene.
Expectation: Everyone tolerates pain differently. Ensure you book an esthetician who hears your concerns, has professionally waxed for a while, and understands how your hair type works. Check out Jade's tips on when to "run" and book another professional. Some suggest taking a pain reliever 30 minutes before your appointment. However, this isn't necessary, especially if you are visiting a trained speed waxer.
Aftercare: Is essential to the waxing process, especially if you are a woman of color. Exfoliation is key! Proper aftercare will keep you smooth and happy for months after your wax. Using a dry brush, exfoliation glove, or chemical pads will save your kitty from hair bumps and help sooth the area.
I had so much fun learning from Jade, and I had the best wax experience ever. She has gained a long term customer, and I won't trust my Brazilian Waxes to anyone else moving forward! Visit her! Tell her Tiffany, sent you!
Jade was knowledgeable, full of personality, and ensured I felt comfortable. I had the fastest wax of my life; all three services took under 20 minutes! Can you say that about your last wax? I left my appointment with Jade feeling empowered with knowledge, and feeling sassy because I was "bare" everywhere. You'll see in the video how my wax experience went, and you'll get to learn all about waxing from a professional! If you are local to the Cary area, make sure you stop by and tell her that Tiffany sent you!
Until Next Time,
